New Toys
October 18th, 2004
I have bought some new geek toys for myself over the last couple of weeks... and now that they are all finally setup and running, I thought I would share.
First, to replace my aging second-hand Vaio notebook, I bought a Sony TR3AP1. It's awesome... small, light, and much faster than my previous computer. Plus, it has built-in 802.11b/g wireless, and a CD-RW/DVD-rom. Totally sweet, I am very much loving it.
With the notebook, I also bought a 17" LCD monitor. The notebook itself has a small widescreen display. Fine for use while traveling, or sitting in bed... but not great while sitting at my desk for hours at a time. The Acer monitor I bought is beautiful, and wasn't too pricey either.
MeLisa and I are both now 100% wirelessly networked in the house... so, I also replaced our 802.11b access points with faster 802.11g ones. Along with the higher speed, the new access points also allow us to connect through the new WPA security standard. Being the paranoid geek that I am, it's nice to have stronger wireless security in the house. Surfing the web from the couch has never been nicer
And finally... a new cell phone. I used to carry a cell phone and a clunky PDA with me all the time. Needed the cell phone to make phone calls, but kept my schedule and all my contacts in the PDA. I decided that there had to be a better way to do it, so I went looking for a solution. I found a site selling the older Treo 300's for fairly cheap, so I grabbed one to replace both of the other devices. Although, it's a little bigger than my previous phone... I love it. And being able to hop on AOL instant messenger from anywhere? Priceless
