New camera
Updated: Jan 24th, 2008 (RSS)

If you couldn't tell from older posts, I am a bit of an amatuer photographer. Up until recently though, I have been working with a fairly old camera (a seven year old 2mp Sony). Not anymore though! Yesterday I bought a new DSC-H9 8.1mp camera and it is pretty awesome.

  • 8.1-megapixel Super HAD CCD captures enough detail for photo-quality 16 x 22-inch prints
  • Carl Zeiss 15x optical zoom lens; 3.0-inch LCD display
  • High Sensitivity Mode (ISO 3200) allows for shooting even in low-light conditions
  • MPEG Movie VX Fine mode captures VGA (640 x 480) audio/video clips at high frame rate
  • Night Vision mode allows camera to take images in almost complete darkness

  • I just got the camera yesterday, so I haven't had a ton of time to mess around with it. Overall though, I am really happy with it so far. Came with quite a few useful accessories (a flower lens hood, a remote, a camera strap, a USB/video output cable) and the camera has way more functionality than I know what to do with right now. Should easily keep me busy for the next couple of weeks just trying to figure everything out.

Here are a couple of random pics I shot yesterday while messing around with the camera. Nothing fancy, and the pics were shot in pretty bad lighting conditions so there is a lot of noise. Still, considering they were all just done on the fly, I think they came out pretty well.

If you want to see the full image, just click on the thumbnails below. Be warned though, they are huge.... 3,264 x 2,448 and almost 8mb in size.

The macro mode is pretty nice too... here is a cropped shot of the wine label taken with the macro lens:

Very nice camera, and so far I am really happy with it. Will be great for taking pictures of the baby
