Shitstorm
January 7th, 2005
It was a little before 6:00am this morning when I got the phone call... "Chris, we have a big problem..."
Apparently, our database admin at work accidentally deleted the backend of our ERP system... basically the system responsible for everything my company does: inventory, orders, cash applications, shipping... everything. Which, in itself wouldn't be so bad except for the fact that he hasn't been doing hot backups of the system lately (unbeknownest to the rest of us), and now the most recent copy of the database is from 12/31.
This situation leads me to the following two observations:
- First, thank god I am not involved in the administration of the database or anything like that. Some heads are going to fucking roll because of this, and I am very very happy to have nothing to do with it.
- Second... what kind of moron doesn't make a backup of the single most important server in the company? I can understand making a mistake and deleting the database files. Fine.. shit happens. But to not be backing the system up? Absolutely insane.
So now I am sitting here in the office, in the middle of a shitstorm I had nothing to do with. It's going to be a looooong weekend, I think.
